If i ant’t got you – Alica Keys

“If I ain’t got you” was written and recorded by an American singer Alicia Keys. It is from her second album The Diary of Alicia Keys released in 2003. She was inspired by an unexpected event 2001, when R&B singer Aaliyah passed away. She said: The song idea came together right after Aaliyah passed away. It was such a sad time and no one wanted to believe it. It just made everything crystal clear to me—what matters, and what doesn’t.

The message she wants to send to her audience is” how material things don’t feed the soul”. And this song hit top 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and was in top of the Hot R&B/ hip-hop songs chart for 6 weeks. This beautiful songs brought her a nomination in 2005 Grammy Awards for Song of the year and she also won the Best Female R&B vocal Performance.

Alicia Keys wrote about many people live for different thing in life: “Some people live for the fortune, some people live just for the fame, some people live for the power, some people live just to play the game, and some people think that the physical things define what’s within…”

“And I’ve been there before, and that life’s a bore
So full of the superficial

Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, yeah

Some people search for a fountain
That promises forever young
Some people need three dozen roses
And that’s the only way to prove you love them

Hand me the world on a silver platter
And what good would it be
With no one to share, with no one who truly cares for me

If I ain’t got you with me baby
So nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
If I ain’t got you with me baby”

But after what happen from the death of the R&B singer in 2001, she realizes those material means nothing to her when all she wants in life is to fulfill her soul with love. Life will be boring if there is no one she can share everything with. The message in this song is that people want everything in life: “Some people want diamond rings… Some people search for a fountain… Some people need three dozen roses” but all are meaningless without your heart fulfilled with love “nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing if I ain’t got you with me baby”: appreciate you love an your soul more than physical material in life.

ME, MYSELF AND I – Beyonce

“Me, Myself and I” is an R&B song recorded by Beyoncé and it is an single in her album Dangerously in Love released in 2003. Me, Myself and hit radio in the United States on October 19, 2003. It reached top 4 on US Billboard Hot 100 and top 20 in Australia and United Kingdom .The song brought Beyoncé an ASCAP Pop Music Award and a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

The lyrical content of the song is about a girl whose boyfriend is cheating on her. After ending the relationship, she realizes that all was wrong, he wasn’t the right one for her and she wasted her time being in the relationship. Me, myself and I is like a song for a celebration for her new life with lesion after the break up and a stronger sense  of independent and self- confident. The music video of this song reflects the right direction that we make relying on “me, myself and I’.

The song begins with an intro “all the ladies, if you feel me, help me sing it out”

[Verse 1]
‘I can’t believe I believed
Everything we had would last
So young and naive for me
To think she was from your past
Silly of me to dream
Of one day having your kids
Love is so blind
It feels right when it’s wrong”

[Verse 2]
“I can’t believe I fell for your schemes
I’m smarter than that
So dumb and naive to believe
That with me you’re a changed man
Foolish of me to compete
When you cheat with loose women”

Verse 1 and verse 2 shows the listener am image of a girl who was naive, young and silly in love with a womanizing guy. “Love is blind”, she feels silly, dumb and naive to dream of one day having a happy family with a man “cheat with loose women”.

 “It took me some time
But now I moved on
Because I realized I got”

[Chorus]
“Me, myself, and I
That’s all I got in the end
That’s what I found out
And it ain’t no need to cry
I took a vow that from now on
I’m gonna be my own best friend”

She realizes it is time for this relationship ended and it’s time for her to move on. She knows that it will take a while but it is a right choice to love and live for herself.

[Verse 3]
“So controlling, you said
That you love me but you don’t
Your family told me
One day I would see it on my own
Next thing I know, I’m dealing
With your three kids in my home
Love is so blind
It feels right when it’s wrong”

[Verse 4]
“Now that it’s over
Stop calling me
Come pick up your clothes
Ain’t no need to front
Like you’re still with me
All your homies know
Even your very best friend
Tried to warn me on the low
It took me some time
But now I am strong
Because I realized I got”

[Bridge]
“(Got me, myself, and I)
I know that I will never disappoint myself
(I must have cried a thousand times)
All the ladies, if you feel me
Help me sing it out
(I can’t regret time spent with you)
Yeah, you hurt me
But I learned a lot along the way
(So I have vowed to make it through)
After all the rain
You’ll see the sun come out again
(Now I’ve got me, myself, and I)
Hey
I know that I will never disappoint myself
(I must have cried a thousand times)
I’ve cried
All the ladies, if you feel me
Help me sing it out
(I can’t regret time spent with you)
Hey!
Yeah, you hurt me
But I learned a lot along the way
(So I have vowed to make it through)
After all the rain
You’ll see the sun come out again”

Verse 3 is where she understand the importance of herself in life: “now I am strong…I know that I will never disappoint myself” “you hurt me…I’ve cried” but she has learned a valuable lesson along the way. She truly believes in “me, myself and I” and believes that “after all the rain, you’ll see the sun come out again” .

I WAS HERE – Beyonce

“I Was Here” is a great song of an American singer Beyoncé from her fourth studio album 4 released June 24, 2011.The song was written by Diane Warren and is a reflective R&B ballad. The song goes higher and higher, chorus by chorus, until Beyoncé reaches her apex, delivering some of her best vocals on the album.

A music video for this song was released on August 19, 2012 and it shows Beyoncé performing the song live at the United Nations General Assembly while images of volunteers doing humanitarian work were projected on the screen behind her. It was donated to the World Humanitarian Day and aimed to create social media history with one billion people sharing the message of doing something good for another person. This beautiful song attracts many positive comments and attention from audience around the world. A year after the album 4 released, “I Was Here” the song also appeared on several charts internationally in 2012. T Moreover, this song was prominently featured in the Susan Sarandon film The Meddler in 2016.

Beyoncé vulnerably reviews her past. She wants to leave an impact and make her mark in this world before her life comes to an end. The song begins with 15 seconds of a sombre rhythm:

“I want to leave my footprints on the sand of time

Know there was something that, something that I left behind

When I leave this world, I’ll leave no regrets

Leave something to remember, so they won’t forget

I was here, I lived, I loved, I was here

I did, I’ve done, everything that I wanted

And it was more than I thought it would be

I will leave my mark, soul, everyone will know, I was here

I wanna say I lived each day, until I died

You know that I, been something in, somebody’s life

The hearts I have touched

Will be the proof that I leave

That I made a difference

And this world will see”

“I just want them to know

That I gave my all, did my best

Brought someone some happiness

Left this world a little better just because, I was here”

She wants the world to know what she has done in this world. She wants her audience to know that she lived every day until her time ended. She gave her all and did her best to bring people happiness in life. She has a meaningful life with a beautiful heart and with no regrets when the last day comes.

The rhythm of the song, the emotion and power in the voice of Beyoncé help the song reach to millions hearts. It encourages people in the world to live and appreciate every moment in their life, live their life with love and kindness to make the difference in this world so when end it comes to an end, there is no regrets about life within you.

Chateau – Angus & Julia Stone

The brother and sister duo are incredible artists and their song Chateau just reiterates the talent the pair have.

The start is smooth melody of piano keys followed by an increase speed of the keys than incomes the guitar providing soft and quick strings.

Here the song starts to speed up into the first verse.

[Chorus: Angus Stone]
I don’t mind if you wanna go anywhere
I’ll take you there
We can go if you wanna go anywhere
I’ll take you there
We can go to the Chateau Marmont
And dance in the hotel room
We can run with the headlights on
Until we got nothing to lose

During the first verse in comes the drum initiating the bass of the song.

Angus sings in such a quiet and peaceful way tha eases you while sending shivers through you.
[Post-Chorus: Angus Stone]
We hide, lifting from the ground
We go, never coming down
I don’t mind if you wanna go anywhere
I’ll take you there

[Verse: Julia Stone]
Every day the weekend, I’m tryna be your best friend
Trying just to figure it out
Go on and let your gun burst, living on the outskirts
Trying just to figure it out
Talking like a deadbeat, I just wanted you to see
Everything that I could see
Walking in the night sky, I’m always on your side
You are really saving me

Julia is a soft singer the pair mix so well together.
Her voice as well soothes you and you feel as if you are floating listening tot his song.

We can go to the Chateau Marmont
And dance in the hotel room
We can go to the Chateau Marmont
And dance, we got nothing to lose
I don’t mind if you wanna go anywhere
I’ll take you there
We can go if you wanna go anywhere
I’ll take you there

[Post-Chorus: Angus Stone]
We hide, lifting from the ground
We go, never coming down
I don’t mind if you wanna go anywhere
I’ll take you there
I’ll take you there
I’ll take you there

The hoooing of both singers bring even more peace to this song.
[Bridge: Both]
Throw me a bone
Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know
Throw me a bone
Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know
Throw me a bone
Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know
Throw me a bone
Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know
Throw me a bone
(Don’t go wasting your time)
Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know
Throw me a bone
(Don’t go wasting your time)
Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know
Throw me a bone
(Don’t go wasting your time)
Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know

The song finishes with the pair switching through lyrics together it honestly puts the finishing touches on what is a great song.

The hoooing appears again in the last verse to cement the relaxation of the song.

Keep Me In the Open – Gang of Youths

Song Six: Keep Me In the Open

Keep me in the open is a song about lead singer David Le’aupepe’s ex-wifes battle with cancer, however in this blog it has been interpreted in the author’s own way, as they were struggling in a relationship at the time and it reflects how they were feeling as well. The song begins with some incredibly disheartening lines,

“I don’t know if I blame you for being so distant,

But I’m trying to be real with you, and God, it’s been a hell of a week”

This is relates to the author in a few ways, as they were in a long distance relationship, spoiler alert: They never work out, however, the author expected distance as it’s a difficult situation to be in, however distance can eventually lead straight into ignoring and that’s where the second line really hits home. There’s only one person you really want to talk to and when you can’t it’s almost unbearable.

“If it means being here with you, then hey, I am trying to be
I’ll always struggle to think of you in a harsh way”

The author was desperately trying to get over to where the significant other was living, but it never seemed to work. The author was convinced that when they saw each other again, everything would make sense. However, even when the inevitable conversation happened and they tried to make the author hate them, which really reflects in the second line, even now the author thinks no differently of them.

I’m getting used to the sleepless hours from sundown
The terrible dreams that lead me inward to terrible truths

It’s amazing how much of a toll this sort of stress can take on a person, sleep becomes difficult and even when you finally do fall asleep, the mind loves playing tricks on you. So even in your own dreams, you cannot escape these thoughts.

“Tell me how I can do this thing
Tell me how I can help this thing go easily
‘Cause I’m trying, honeybee”

In a situation where you can feel a relationship failing, you’ll try anything that you can to make it work, this lines resonate with the author quite strongly as that’s how they felt for most of the last part of the relationship.

“When did everything get this weird? How the f**k did it start?
Did you ever believe in me? Was it always so hard?”

Again, at some point in the relationship you have a deep look inside and you don’t understand where everything started to go wrong, was there one incident? One Moment? One situation? It becomes very difficult to deal with to try and pinpoint where exactly a relationship went wrong. The second line is relevant to the author after the inevitable conversation about the ending of a relationship, where things were brought up that had never been an issue throughout the entire relationship, which is a hard pill to swallow at the end of a relationship.

“The heart is closed, but keep me in the open
‘Cause I deserve better than this
Yeah, I deserve better than this”

During the author’s last relationship, the significant other was a very closed book, but usually very open and accommodating to the author. So the first line reflects on the entire relationship, especially when it went long distance. You understand people require space and time, which is completely understandable; however, you don’t want to be cut out completely and end up on the outer of a relationship you’re trying so hard to maintain.

The finals lines can be taken a bit selfishly, as at the end of the of a relationship sometimes you feel like you’ve done all that you can do and sometimes your best just isn’t good enough. But, you can feel you deserve a better outcome then what you were served. However, that’s life.

HALO- BEYONCE

“Halo” comes from I Am… Sasha Fierce of Beyoncé’s third studio album released 2008. This is one of the most impressive songs with emotional vocalizations and angelic overtones. The power in her beautiful voice help her achieve the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 52nd Grammy Awards.

“Halo” was originally written by E. Kidd Bogart & One Republic Ryan Tedder and was in the top songs of Brazil.  When this song was introduced and performed, it became the best-selling single in 2009.

Beyoncé professes her love to her lover in heaven with open-hearted emotion. The song begins with the walls was built up about love and they completely stumble down when I see you. You are like an angle with a beautiful halo.

 [Verse 1]

 Remember those walls I built?

Well, baby, they’re tumbling down

And they didn’t even put up a fight

They didn’t even make a sound

I found a way to let you in

But I never really had a doubt

Standing in the light of your halo

I got my angle now

Beyoncé sings the first verse with a low register and gradually increases her voice power in the pre-chorus and chorus.

[Pre-chorus]

It’s like I’ve been awakened

Every rule I had you breaking

It’s the risk that I’m taking

I ain’t never gonna shut you out!

[Chorus]

Everywhere I’m looking now

I’m surrounded by your embrace

Baby, I can see your halo

You know you’re my saving grace

You are everything I need and more

It’s written all over your face

Baby, I can feel your halo

Pray it won’t fade away

[Verse 2]

Hit me like a ray of sun

Burning through my darkest night

You’re the only one that I want

Think I’m addicted to your light

I swore I’d ever fall again

But this don’t even feel like falling

Gravity can’t begin to pull me back to the ground again

The lyric emotionally show how much she misses her lover in the heaven. She can see and feel like he is here by her side: “everywhere I’m looking now I’m surrounded by your embrace, Baby, I can feel your halo, pray it won’t fade away, you’re the only one that I want, think I’m addicted to your light”

BROKEN-HEARTED GIRL – Beyoncé

“Broken-hearted Girl” is a single in an album I am…. Sasha Fierce of an American singer Beyoncé, released 2008. This is a song about love with a classic rhythm. It describes the heartbroken feeling and insecurity of love. This song was on the top twenty on the single charts of Australia, Ireland, and German…

[Verse]

“You’re the only one I wish I could forget
The only one I’d love to not forgive
And though you break my heart, you’re the only one
And though there are times when I hate you
Cause I can’t erase
The times that you hurt me
And put tears on my face
And even now while I hate you”

The first part of the lyrics brings up a picture of a girl with a broken heart but still being deeply in love. She is afraid of being away from her love, “I don’t wanna be without you babe”; “I don’t want a broken heart”, although “But sometimes I feel you’re not deserving me”, “There are times when I hate you”

[Verse 2]

“Something that I feel I need to say
But up to now I’ve always been afraid

That you would never come around
And still I want to put this out
You say you’ve got the most respect for me
But sometimes I feel you’re not deserving me
And still you’re in my heart
But you’re the only one and yes
There are times when I hate you
But I don’t complain
Cause I’ve been afraid that you would’ve walk away
Oh but now I don’t hate you
I’m happy to say
That I will be there at the end of the day”

In the second verse,  it shows clearly an insecure feeling of love  “But up to now I’ve always been afraid that you would never come around, I’ve been afraid that you would’ve walk away”, however, she is always believeing, waiting and keeping this love “ still you’re in my heart”, “I’m happy to say that I will be there at the end of the day”

NEVER GIVE UP- YOLANDA ADAMS

This song is from album Believe released 2001. It is one of my favorite song in the album. It is a very inspirational song with a slow rhythm. Yolanda begins with a story of a girl who is shy and afraid to express herself to the world.

[Verse 1:]

“Visions that can change the world
Trapped inside an ordinary girl
She looks just like me
Too afraid to dream out loud
And though it’s simple, your idea
It won’t make sense to everybody

You need courage now
if you’re going to persevere”

The first verse shows an understanding and sympathy to people who need courage and confident in life.

[Pre-Chorus:]

To fulfill your divine purpose
You’ve gotta answer when you’re called
So don’t be afraid to face the world against all odds

[Chorus:]

Keep the dream alive don’t let it die
If something deep inside keeps inspiring you to try
Don’t stop and never give up
Don’t ever give up on you, don’t give up

The pre-chorus and chorus encourage the listener to be strong to face the world, keep the fire of your dream inside and never give up on what you want to do.

[Verse 2:]

“Every victory comes in time
Work today to change tomorrow
It gets easier
Who’s to say that you can’t fly?
Every step you take you get
Closer to your destination
You can feel it now

Don’t you know you’re almost there?”

“Sometimes life can place a stumbling block in your way
But you’ve gotta keep the faith
Bring what’s deep inside your heart to the light
and never give up”

This verse is like a message that Yolanda wants to send to the audience that the journey to your dream takes time, there are difficulties and challenges but you are on your way, so keep going and never give up on yourself.

[Bridge:]

“Who holds the pieces to complete the puzzle?
The answer that can solve a mystery
The key that can unlock your understanding
It’s all inside of you
You have everything you need
So…
Don’t ever give up on you”

In the end, the lyrics is about: “Never give up” in yourself is the key to achieve the world so believe in yourself and be brave to be on the way your dream.

Greek Tragedy – The Wombats

The gruesome music video was directed by Finn Keenan (The Strypes “She’s So Fine”) and features Skins star April Pearson as a deranged fan of the band. “We all die in the video,” the band told FasterLouder “So as far as I’m concerned it’s the best video ever made – until the one when we all kill each other.”

[Verse 1]
We’re smashing mics in karaoke bars
You’re running late with half your make-up on
This method acting might pay our bills
But soon enough there’ll be a different role to fill

[Pre-Chorus 1]
I love this feeling
But I hate this part
I wanted this to work so much
I drew up our plans on a chart
Cars are flipping, I’m in hot pursuit
My character’s strong but my head is loose

The first part of the song brings light upon how the relationship is fading especially with the lyrics ‘I wanted this to work so much’ and more ‘I drew up our plans on a chart’. This lyrics identify the ultimate end of a relationship that the two seem to be holding onto but neither want to give it up regardless of the signs.

[Chorus 1]
She hits like ecstasy
Comes up and bangs the sense out of me

[Verse 2]
The tarot cards say it’s not so bad
And the blades rotate, there’s just no landing pad
And better have said it but, darling, you’re the best
I’m just tired of falling up the Penrose steps

The second part shows how fate may say the relationship will stay in tact but the relationship will never land anywere safely they instaed just keep stayig in the same position.

[Pre-Chorus 2]

I hate this feeling
But I love this part
She really wants to make it work
And I clearly want to let it start
We’ll build a water slide
As soon as I get home

Oh and she hits like ecstasy
Comes up and bangs the sense out of me
It’s wrong but surely worse to leave
She hits like ecstasy

[Outro]
So free up the cheaper seats
Here comes a Greek Tragedy

I love this song its another favourite its great insight into how even if we love someone deeply toxic relationships are not worth staying even if sign are there to stay ultimately you have to go with gut feel about the relationship.

Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves) – The Wombats

This is the first single by indie rock band The Wombats from their second album.

Vocalist Matthew “Murph” Murphy told The Sun it had nothing to do with vampires or other bloodsucking creatures. He added: “It’s an angst rebellious song about everything. There are also no guitars – just synths. I got bored at looking at guitar amps.”

Murphy explained the inspiration for the track to The Sun: “The song is about the need I personally felt to better Let’s Dance to Joy Division and to not be pigeonholed by it.
Time will tell if I was successful or not. The first time we went to Tokyo, we ended up in this crazy little bar called Edge End. I’ve since wanted to re-live that night over and over again and that’s the bar I’m referring to.”

[Verse 1]
We’re self-imploding under the weight of your advice
I wear a suitcase under each one of my eyes
Finally, I know now what it takes
It takes money and aeroplanes

[Chorus]
If you love me, let me go back to that bar in Tokyo
Where the demons from my past leave me in peace
I’ll be animating every night
The grass will be greener on the other side
And the vampires and wolves won’t sink their teeth
I’m sick of dancing with the beast

I love this song its my personal i enjoy the fast drumming and loud vocals by the band it is a great song.

The dancing with the beast I think reflects to life and how we all need a break from it every so often.

[Verse 2]
Astrophysics, you’ll never be my closest friend
I find no comfort in what my mind can’t comprehend
Finally, I work out what it takes
It takes money and aeroplanes

[Chorus]
If you love me, let me go back to that bar in Tokyo
Where the demons from my past leave me in peace
I’ll be animating every night
The grass will be greener on the other side
And the vampires and wolves won’t sink their teeth
I’m sick of dancing with the beast

No matter how much it needs me
Go and follow someone else’s lead

[Chorus]
If you love me, let me go back to that bar in Tokyo
Where the demons from my past leave me in peace
I’ll be animating every night
The grass will be greener on the other side
And the vampires and wolves won’t sink their teeth
I’m sick of dancing with the beast
